Facing the "Small Luberon", this old convent was founded by a small community of - Carmelite monks - around 1250 and developed on a pre-existent religious troglodytic site. Saint Hilaire is a unique and fine architectural grouping, recalling gothic structures while keeping a romanesque atmosphere.
You reach specific pages while clicking on this type of composition : - Carmelite monks -
It has been a private property since 1961, when René and Anne-Marie Bride, from Reims, acquired it and it was listed as "Monument Historique" in 1975. All along those years the family’s aim has constantly been to restore it as it was at the end of the XVIIIth century, when the monks left.
You are invited to follow the path going round Saint-Hilaire (the blue arrows). It will take you 15 min. As you walk out of the oak grove, the view on the monastic buildings solidly anchored in the rocky outcrop of the terraces is truly magnificent.
